The Healthy Living programme helps elderly people in residential or sheltered housing to stay fit and heathy and remain socially active. "Most of the people we refer to the group are very isolated because they don't have any family," says Marcia, the project's coordinator. Overcoming loneliness and encouraging aging people to stay physically fit plays a big part in their general wellbeing.

Narthex was established in 1995 by St John’s church, Sparkhill, as a ‘social expression of church’, a way of serving local people by providing services and facilities useful to the community, such as weekly job clubs, homework groups and parent and toddler sessions. The church also works with older people and refugees to reduce their sense of isolation.

Run as a Community Interest Company, Boni Kidz also offers opportunities for volunteers to learn childcare skills. Cathie Wilcox, the project manager explains: "There are two-sided benefits; the kids benefit which enables parents to have jobs."

"We stand out because we're in it for the long term...we ask people what they want of us, rather than going in with what we think people need."

St Hugh's church in the Lewsey area of Luton is an active social centre. Many families in the area find it hard to cope on low incomes, and the church's Big Breakfast club means that children are able to start the day with a breakfast that they wouldn't be able to get at home. "It's really fun," says Jordan, who enjoys going to the church's youth work sessions. "I come for the food, and it's lively...my friends motivate me to come and know God more."

Superkidz runs community outreach to support families, and children's sessions which give children and young people a safe, inspiring place to play and develop. Nick, whose wife Helen started the initiative, says: "God loves them more than they could imagine; we're helping them to understand that."

Crisis Centre Ministries opened a cafe in the St Pauls area of Bristol in 1985. Now known as the Wild Goose, the cafe provides advice and support to homeless and vulnerably housed people in Bristol. Alan, the cafe manager says, "It's just about being with them, impacting through our actions, giving people a hug when they come through the door."

ASCEND (All Saint's Employment and New Directions) provides skills training, helping South Oxhey residents to develop self-esteem and motivation in looking for work. Project Manger Christine Wyard explains, "success is about seeing people move on in their lives: learning to read and write, so that they can help their children with their homework; giving people the confidence to call social services; the confidence to begin to look for work. We see people move on in their lives".
